SIMON EVANS

Currently incarcerated at Tongariro Prison, New Zealand

Has served 36 years

Artist statement:

I learnt to draw from my older brother who was an artist. I started to draw when I was in high school in art class where the teacher would encourage and inspire me. I saw it as a way to express my innermost being because of a stuttering problem I was born with. I now see my artwork as a connection towards myself, how I am feeling, what I see and what is within me, I want to get it down on paper. So basically, I still do artwork in prison because it is a part of me, it's what I enjoy.

Artist bio:

I was born into a large catholic family of 15 children and from an early age I had looked up to an older brother who lived in Australia and also enjoyed drawing. I remember when at primary school my teacher would allow me to use A3 drawing paper because she knew I would use up every corner of the page. The other pupils used A4 paper. Every school I attended after this I was in the art class where the teacher would encourage and help me develop my artistic ability, until I reached a prison where I signed up to do art courses and completed certificate and diploma programs in 2015 and 2017. I continue to draw and develop my artistic ability to this day, and hope to have my own art gallery one day in the future after release, displaying and selling my artwork.
